Why do Citizens of the United States consider themselves the only real "Americans"?

Question: Considering there is North America, Central America and South America, I don't understand why people continuously use the term American to refer only to the United States. Why has the term been narrowed to the United States which overall makes up a very small part of the combined Americas?
Answers: People identify themselves with their proper country name, not their continent's name. For example, British, German, French, not European (though this term is gaining broader use with the implementation of the EU). Or Japanese, Chinese, Korean, not Asian (Country origin compared with general ethnicity).

Since the United States is the only country in either North or South America with the term America in it's proper country name, that term has been used as short hand to refer to anyone who is a citizen of the United States of America. This may change, however, as the world switches from individual country economics & politics to continental economics & politics.
cause we're the one's with america in our country's name. and we have the biggest guns
because the term AMericans was invented by the Americans of the united states.

duh. write that down.
Most people cant even name 5 south american countrys.
I think we need to be reminded of it, but deep down I think we know that we share the name with everyone that you mentioned, and Canada.
Because they are rude asses thats why!!!!!!!
