Nigerian 411 scam??

Question: what is this
Answers: The basic idea is as follows:

You receive typically an e-mail apparently from a top Nigerian (typically - they are many varitions on this type of scam) civil servant/ official telling you about funds that for some reason cannot be handed back to the government because of some corruption or scandal or administrative reason. The funds will be wasted and if removed from the country, not missed.

They want to take these lost funds out of the country but need to use an overseas bank account that is unassociated with them. They ask you to use your local account (or to set one up)and as a result of letting them pay the money into your account you get to keep half ofthe money (usually hundreds of thousands at least).

If you are dumb enough to respond - eventually you are told that in order to clear the funds to your account - some small duties, fees or legal costs have to be met. You are asked to give these costs to the Nigerians before you receive the millions into your account, You pay the amount - maybe hundreds or thousands of dollars and wait to receive your millions. You wait and wait until you realise you have been had. You will never hear back from then again - unless they claim your payment was lost - please send a second payment so we can send you millions . Of course it is all a scam - there are never any millions - they just want you to keep sending them momey for as long as you can remain duped.

Variations on this scam include receiving a telephone call telling you that you have won an international lottery/ lotto prize. Yes you guessed it - you have to send off a small tax payment first to enable the winning cheque to be released to you.

Why do people believe that you can get something for nothing? Why can peopple be convinced that they have won a lottery thet never entered? Gullibilty, desperation, greed? Who knows but people fall for this kind of scam all the time.

Do a search on the net for more information if you think you are being scammed.
