Why Do Presidents Terms end on Even Year?

Question: If George Washington became president in 1789-1797, how come we vote presidents in office on even years. If a president dies during a term the vice president takes over for the remainder of the years, so how come elections are now on even years instead of odd years
Answers: presidents are elected in november of an even year, but they don't take office until january of the next year, which would be odd
Presidents are elected in even years but they don't take office until after the new year, in an odd year.
Conspiracy!!!!!! What if George planned 9/11 and used his altering of dates to get AWAY WITH IT!!!!

If it wasn't for those rotten kids, I would've gotten away with it!!!
Actually they end in odd years. Bush's term is over on January 20, 2009, not 2008. Clinton's term ended on January 20, 2001. It is established in the Constitution.

We vote the year before to give the sitting president time to wrap things up and the new guy time to select his cabinet and establish policy.
