Do Democrats and Republicans really believe the things they say about each other?

Question: I've been astonished by some of the things I read here. Apparently some people honestly believe that all Democrats are on welfare or are illegal immigrants, or are communists secretly trying to overthrow America. On the other hand, apparently all Republicans are rich, or are ignorant hillbillies who attend backwoods churches and will vote for anyone who preaches against abortion and gay marriage.

Now I understand that some rhetoric and exaggeration are to be expected in an election year, but people say these things so passionately and repeatedly that it makes me wonder. Don't people realize that the great majority of both parties are middle class people with jobs and families, that both live in every town and city in America, and that they just have different ideas about what the most important problems are and how to solve them? Wouldn't we get a lot more done if we treated each other with respect despite our differences and started from the basis of all we have in common?
Answers: Studies have found that most Americans don't identify strongly with either party, even though they may consistently vote one way or the other. But there is a minority who fervently believe that everything of value lies with one party and that the other is evil incarnate. They are silly people, and you should pay them no attention, except to be sure that they are never given positions of responsibility. Zealots of any kind are dangerous. Unfortunately, a site like this which gives people a mostly unregulated forum for expressing their opinions, is almost irresistible to those who have already driven everyone they know away with their ranting. They imagine that here there are vast crowds listening raptly to their words of wisdom and at last they will be able to have the influence they deserve. In a way, it provides a safe outlet for people who might otherwise be dangerous. I just ignore the worst of them, and I encourage you to do so as well.
people fall back on name calling and slander when they have nothing left to offer in the debate and the last 20 years or so that is all both the republicans and Democrats have been doing .

they are failed party's running on failed policy's

vote 3rd party and vote Ron Paul 08
Of course they do not. We would get a lot more done, but there are so many disagreements between the two that it's pretty hard to agree on something. Only when both parties are willing to help America and respect its' culture we will ever really get along.
Hence the growing popularity in our internet age of the unknowns , dark horses with views that reflect the concerns of the average American: taxes, the war, the economy.

Unfortunately the old way (media frenzy) hype and rhetoric made for good television and were encouraged. This is changing, but still the big namers are big namers because they say so, and they are terrified of losing that power.
For the most part they probably don't believe what they say about each other. Name calling and finger pointing attracts a certain amount of voters so they have to appease them.

Disagreement is fundamental for democracy. I believe our differences are what make us strong. America's founders knew this, which is why they designed a system that is inherently inefficient (flilibustering, checks and balances, etc). Government should be slow and deliberate. However, what has happened in this country is that attention spans have disappeared and replaced by soundbytes... Either in formal debates or on internet forums, Americans seem to want to get through things way too quickly, and often resort to name-calling (since a well-thought out argument requires effort they appear to not want to spend). In years gone by, presidental debates would last for HOURS to discuss a single topic...now candidates are given 30 seconds to get a point accross. What a shame...
