Welfare Reforms hurting Mentally ill?

Question: John Howard says that if they can work, make them work. It appears like a lot of things, Safety has gone out the window as well. Asking these people to work is something from the 1800's. How can you possibly ask a mentally handicapped person to put themselves and others at risk in the Workplace? Speaking of Handicapped people,I think it is time Johnny was shown the door. Just think of it as helping the little fellow take a well earned?? Rest.
Answers: I think the latest work for welfare scheme brought in by dear old johnny is the most demeaning and threatening scheme ever introduced.

No wonder we have a high volume of mental illness in our country and this is causing unnecessary stress to everyone.

He needs to go away and never come back!!!

Expecting the disadvantaged to go look for work and all the single parents as well, why doesn't he try and walk in our shoes, he seems to do enough walking, but not in the right direction, obviously.

We are treated like the scum of the earth, and our paltry welfare payments are cut off, should we miss an appointment, or not hand in our dole form in time.

If any of us are fortunate enough to find employment where are all the child care centres to accompany our children

Whoever thought of this so called new beaut scheme, obviously has no children, but than again they are in a secure political position of employment so what do they care.

All I can say is go PINK with her song Dear Mr.President we need someone do get a song happening for Dear Mr.Howard without the Dear though, he is not deserving of the title.
Yes... If you think about it, you couldn't really trust a severely mentally handicapped person with a lot of responsibilities, or anything that's potentially dangerous. If they can work, they can probably only work in jobs that are incredibly dull and unfullfilling (eg stuffing envelopes, Wal-Mart greeter), which would be cruel to force someone into, especially someone who might feel very uncomfortable around others and doesn't even have a hope of getting promoted to something better.
Not sure but I don't think the mentally ill are getting welfare to begin with. I think welfare reform is probably hurting the poor as well because they are getting kicked off.
I dont believe they should be forced to work, likewise I do not believe I should be forced to support them.

If you dont work, you dont eat.
If you dont rise, you cant shine.

The poor should be kicked off of welfare. I was homeless at oone time and I did not beg for handouts, I got on my own two feet and made a success out of myself.
I think that should be something your State should handle... this election is a heated debate, and I don't think we need to frustrate our next president with speaking on MORE issues that aren't necessary.
To all the ill informed people in this country in case you are all of the same opinion most of the mentally handicapped people in our great country are more than happy to work. all the comments i have read here are shallow inconsiderate and offencive and the current system is in many ways fair but like anything there is not one single thing on this planet that is perfect so if you believe you are more capable to do a better job go for it stand up and be counted perhaps you may even become a volunteer and give something back to this great nation and to the people that do genuinely need it
A lot of handicapped people do work but not on award wage and they need someone employed to look out for them so they wont save any money doing it.
If he genuinely wants to save money get rid of the baby bonus because I don't want to pay for people to have children if they can't afford them.
I know a person that has schizophrenia in the LaTrobe valley she can't even get to see a trained doctor so i think its a bit of a joke asking her to work. Maybe before we ask the mentally ill to work maybe a higher priority would be making sure they can receive proper medical treatment. How about it Johnny will you drop one of your overseas holidays so the LaTrobe valley can have an on call psychiatrist.
I am starting to sound like a bloody old cracked grammophone record .. BUT we need change ...

There really has been very little forethought in so many areas of the IR laws... main concern is always the god almighty dollar ( now what's that about the love of money being the root of all evil ?????)

there is NO compassion and Compassion has ALWAYS been a major part of who we are as Aussies ..

I was worried Johnny was thrusting us back into the 1950's .. seems more like the 1850's ( though that could explain his faux par re right throuh to 1916) .. with sweat shops and child and vunerable people abuse...

how are you dickie :)
There is not much that I can say that has not already been said. I just wanted to add my own observations as a person who works in the disability sector.

I have worked with people with moderate to profound intellectual disabilities. We find it nearly impossible to find a nice place to have a coffee where the client is made to feel welcome and not stared at and treated like a second-class citizen. We have tried to get some clients into volunteer work - again this is very difficult.

Most clients would love to work - there is just no work that they can do or would be accepted to do.

Since the welfare-to -work program, there are clients who can not walk, talk, use the toilet or feed themselves (do to permanent disability from birth) - it is now required that these clients have annual medical checks just to ensure that they are 'still disabled'.

It is a disgrace!

Bring on the election!!
Obviously Howard has as much knowledge of mental illness as he does of ordinary working families. Or about running the country for all the people for that matter. What we need first is a much better health system equipped to treat all levels of sickness properly. What we have at the moment is mentally ill people thrown onto the streets to fend for themselves because there is nowhere for them. I'm no expert but there has got to be a better way of helping the mentally ill than we have now.
1 in 4 people will experience some form of mental illness in their lives. Depression, bipolar are forms of mental illness that people work with every day, and quite well.
I think that you are talking about severe mental disability.
No, they shouldn't be forced into the workplace. But if they were, they would be forced to sign work agreements and be sacked within a week and what would that do to their already compromised sense of worth.

As for the other. Hmm, don't get me started.
So if they're not meant to work what are we supposed to do? Lock them up and throw away the key? Pretend they don't exist? That IS what they did in the 1800's. What the work for welfare scheme is doing is encouraging those who can work and have the mental capacity to be able to work, go out and work. This helps them integrate into normal society and inteact with everyone else. Most of the positions they are given are no high responsibility and no highly demanding, so why shouldn't they be given the opportunity! And yes, they may get award wages for the jobs they do (so does any other person doing these sorts of jobs) but their wages are topped up by government support and centrelink allowances.
